Day 23 after my total knee replacement
Pain: 1/10
Swelling: 5/10
Bruising: 1/10
Movement: 6/10
For the first time since the operation I feel ready to do something today and so I cleaned the oven in the kitchen. I just propped up my crutches and then sprayed and wiped the hob, doors etc. Probably took 10 minutes in all but it felt good to have contributed something to the cleanliness of the house at last!
I have tried not to sit still for too long and keep getting up to fetch things and also to go upstairs every hour or so. I’m sure this will help the recovery.
I’m also making sure I put plenty of cream on the scar a few times a day to try and get it to heal as unobtrusively as possible.

I had knee replacement on October 12, 2009. Like you I really didn’t know what to expect. It seems we have been recovering at about the same rate.
I was wondering if you had any trouble with leg cramps at night and what you solution was.
I am 4 weeks post surgery now and I wake up every hour or so at night and have to massage and stretch my legs. So I’m getting about 30 minutes of sleep for every hour.
I also have the swelling at the thigh just above the knee. It is a hard tightness that almost never goes away.
I start out patient therapy on Tuesday and am hoping the new exercises will help.
Hi Dana,
I have to say I haven’t had any cramps at night but do wake up regularly every time I change position which is really annoying. I wish I had a solution for your cramps as I’m sure they’re very frustrating, but I don’t – sorry.
I do have the tight feeling around my thigh though. Like an enormous elastic band round it, which if it actually was one I’d ask someone to cut it off as it’s so uncomfortable. The physiotherapist said it had something to do with the swelling, but as I’m 10 days ahead of you I can say that it the tight feeling is actually subsiding at last so hang in there!
